Fascinating combination of culture and modernity.

The island of Taiwan, is located off the coast of Fujian province, China. The island, about 36,000 km2, bounded on the north by the East China Sea, on the south by the South China Sea and on the east by the Pacific Ocean.

The eastern two thirds of the island, have a very mountainous terrain, with five mountain ranges from north to south, the peak Yu Shan, 3,952 msnm is the highest, known as the “Roof of Taiwan.” Among its mountains, the one of Ali stands out, symbol of the charming natural landscapes of Taiwan.

Taiwan is located 200 km southeast of mainland China, separated by the Taiwan Strait.

The island was sighted in the sixteenth century by the Portuguese who gave it the name of Formosa (Beautiful), the Spanish also spotted it almost at the same time, they created the Spanish government of Taiwan, later the island happened to be controlled between 1624 and 1662 by the Dutch, whom he would expel Zheng Chenggong (known as Koxinga), a former pirate under the Ming dynasty, who organized the first wave of Chinese settlers on the island. The Chinese settlers would gradually move the aborigines of the island inland.

The climate of Taiwan is tropical maritime on the coast and subtropical in the mountain areas. In the highest mountains it can snow. The rainy season lasts from June to August affected by the southwest monsoon. Typhoons and earthquakes are frequent on the island.

Taiwan has a fascinating combination of Chinese culture and modernity. In the cultural aspect, there are old buildings and historical sites; temples dedicated to the Buddhist, Taoist and folkloric deities as well as to Confucius; great variety of museums; among them, the famous National Palace Museum with its valuable collection of Chinese artistic treasures; numerous places to dine and enjoy the most famous foods in the world; an infinite variety of folk arts and crafts, as well as very friendly and hospitable people.

The beaches in the west of the island, with white sands and transparent waters, are excellent for bathing. On the north coast it opens in different panoramas. Rock formations, product of the corrosion of the waters of the sea and the action of the typhoons, leave spectacular natural environments in sight.

The location of Taiwan, and its diverse topography, have endowed the island with a wide range of flora and fauna. Some 70 species of mammals live in the Taiwan area; 500 species of birds; 100 species of reptiles; 34 species of amphibians; 2,500 species of fish; 18,000 known species of insects (including 400 species of butterflies). Taiwan includes 6 national parks; 19 nature reserves; 9 natural forest reserves; 15 sanctuaries for wildlife, and 29 important habitats for flora and fauna.

Taiwan offers the highest and most spectacular mountains in Northeast Asia, impressive cliffs, splendid beaches, tranquil lakes, turbulent rivers, and picturesque islands near its shores. Most of its best scenery is found within six national parks: Yangmingshan National Park, in the north; Yushan National Park and Shei-pa National Park, downtown; Kenting National Park, in the south; Taroko National Park, in the east; the Kinmen National Park, on the island of Kinmen (Quemoy); and in three national landscape areas on the northeast and east coasts, as well as in the Pescadores Islands.

Taiwan has more than 50 hotels of international level, with a total of approximately 17 thousand rooms, and about 25 tourist-type hotels with another 2,800 rooms. All major cities and tourist centers around the island have hotels.
